Your words. Your proof.

Record your writing process. Prove you wrote it.

Accused of using AI when you didn't? Lost credit for work that's yours? witnessd captures keystrokes, timing, and revision history as you write, producing cryptographic evidence that holds up in court.

Authoring Text Support in the C2PA Specification

WritersLogic founder David Condrey has landed 22 merged pull requests in the official C2PA specification (c2pa-org/specs-core), authoring the structured text and HTML embedding spec that brings written documents into C2PA as first-class media, plus Unicode security requirements for text fields and hashed-URI support for process evidence.

Quick Start

How witnessd Works

Install, write, commit, export. Four steps from zero to court-ready evidence. Works completely offline with no accounts or configuration.

01

Install & Initialize

One command creates your local evidence database and calibrates the SWF prover to your hardware. No accounts, no cloud, no configuration files. Takes under 60 seconds.

$writersproof init
02

Write in Any App

witnessd captures keystroke timing in the background at under 0.1ms overhead per event. Use Scrivener, Word, VS Code, Google Docs, or anything else. Your workflow does not change.

$writersproof track start
03

Commit Your Evidence

Each commit seals your keystrokes, timing patterns, paste events, and document hash into a tamper-evident checkpoint. The SWF proof chain proves continuous elapsed time.

$writersproof commit essay.md
04

Export & Anchor

Generate a self-contained evidence package with everything needed for independent verification. Optionally anchor to Bitcoin or RFC 3161 timestamp authorities for third-party proof of when your document existed.

$writersproof export --anchor

Detection vs. Process Evidence

Detectors analyze finished text and guess. witnessd records the writing process and captures the evidence.

AI Detection

  • Analyzes text, not process
  • Runs after you finish writing
  • Arms race with every new model
  • No legal weight in court

witnessd

  • Records the physical writing process
  • Evidence captured as you type
  • Dual-layer synthetic detection
  • Structured for court admissibility

Who Uses witnessd

Anyone whose livelihood depends on proving they wrote what they wrote.

Evidence Tiers

Choose how much evidence you need. Each tier builds on the previous, adding stronger guarantees and higher forgery costs.

Core

  • Proves real time elapsed (SWF chain)
  • Tamper-evident document hashing
  • Works fully offline, no account needed

Enhanced

  • + Captures 47 behavioral signals per session
  • + Typing rhythm tied to each document
  • + Cross-checkpoint consistency checks
Recommended

Maximum

  • + Content-behavior entanglement proof
  • + Detects anomalous editing patterns
  • + Quantifies minimum forgery cost ($$$)

Hardware-Bound

  • + Proof locked to your physical machine
  • + TPM 2.0 attestation and key sealing
  • + Real-time presence verification

Cryptographic Evidence

Six independent evidence layers, each producing verifiable, mathematically unforgeable proof. No single layer is a silver bullet. Together, they make fabrication impractical.

Dual-Layer Synthetic Detection

Catches faked keystrokes by cross-checking hardware-level input (IOKit HID) against application events. Software-injected keystrokes fail the hardware check every time.

Document-Bound Keystroke Jitter

Your natural typing rhythm becomes a signature tied to each specific document. These timing patterns are as unique as a fingerprint and cannot be replicated after the fact.

Sequential Work Functions

Proves real time actually passed during your writing session. Each SWF takes ~850ms of CPU work to compute, making it mathematically impossible to backdate evidence.

TPM 2.0 Hardware Binding

Locks your signing keys to your physical machine using the Trusted Platform Module. Monotonic counters prevent anyone from rolling back or replaying old sessions.

Clipboard Forensics

Tracks every paste event with content hashes and timing. Normal editing flows are recorded cleanly; a 5,000-word paste from an external source gets flagged automatically.

Timestamp Trust Anchors

Anchors your proof to Bitcoin (via OpenTimestamps) or RFC 3161 timestamp authorities. A third party can independently confirm when your document existed.

Works With Everything

witnessd captures keystrokes system-wide at the OS level. No plugins, no integrations, no app-specific setup. If you can type in it, witnessd can witness it.

Security & Transparency

No accounts. No cloud. No trust required. Verify everything yourself.

100% Open Source

Every line of code is public on GitHub under Apache-2.0. You can audit the capture logic, cryptographic routines, and evidence generation yourself.

Zero Telemetry

No analytics, no tracking, no usage metrics, no phone-home. There is no server to send data to. We cannot see what you write.

No Cloud Required

Evidence capture, SWF computation, and hash chain construction all happen locally. Your data never leaves your machine unless you choose to anchor timestamps.

No Accounts

No sign-up, no login, no email, no API keys. Download the binary, run writersproof init, and you are recording evidence in under 60 seconds.

Independently Verifiable

Anyone with the evidence packet can verify the cryptographic chain. No trusted authority, no proprietary format, no vendor lock-in.

Peer-Reviewed Standards

Built on an IETF Internet-Draft (draft-condrey-rats-pop). The protocol specification is public and open to community review.
